Mary L. Washington was elected to the House of Delegates in 2010 and is the only openly lesbian African American elected official in Maryland. Delegate Washington earned her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University nearly a decade ago and today uses her quantitative skills as a member of the Appropriations Committee. She is a strong advocate for funding public education, the environment and youth employment. This year, her compelling speech on the House floor supporting marriage equality and advocacy for social justice for the LGBT community led her to be named one of Go Magazine’s “100 Women We Love: Class of 2011.” Read more.
